IT’S TRAVEL SEASON! HERE’S HOW TO BE A GREEN TRAVELER

Do you have a vacation or short trip planned soon? Well, you’re not alone! Summer is the time for travel. However, there’s been a turn of the tide in the past few years. Booking.com found that 87% of its travelers want to travel sustainably. And believe us, sustainable travel is easy, you just have to know what to look for when booking. Here are three important tips for how to be a green traveler.

THINK “GREEN” WHEN PLANNING YOUR TRIP

It all starts with the planning. When first looking into accommodations and location destinations, do a bit of Googling and spend some time researching. There are tons of resources out there to help you choose the right place. For example, Ethical Traveler is one of those resources that lists the most ethical destinations based on environmental protection, social welfare and human rights.

LOOK FOR THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY WAY TO TRAVEL

Now that you’ve got your new sustainable location booked, how do you get there with the smallest carbon footprint? Well, it kind of all depends! Just educate yourself on the most eco friendly ways to travel. For example, cruise lines have historically been the most most damaging, but there are companies like Disney and Hurtigruten who have adjusted their policies to be more sustainable. And if you booked a trip across the ocean, you don’t have many options besides flying. However, you’re not going to be happy about this (kidding!)…always choose the direct flight.

BE SELECTIVE WITH ACTIVITIES

Last up, continue to choose green activities during your trip. There are many tours that can promise a wildly close encounter with exotic animals like elephants or tiger cubs, but consider the potential harm. Just always do some research into any company that you’re considering. Shop at local farmers’ markets and restaurants for locally-grown food that comes directly from your destination. It’s better for the local economy and it’ll be absolutely delicious. And if you really want to do some good, some hotels work directly with non-profit and charitable organizations. Honestly, what better way is there to get to know your destination.

ONE QUICK CHANGE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: MOVE MORE

Health has a lot of components: eating and nutrition, self care, stress, sleep, exercise, etc. In reality, the list could go on and on! So, where to begin? You don’t have to address every unhealthy habit in your life right this second. Instead, take it one step at a time. Start with something simple. This week, use these tips to move more in your everyday life.

MOVE FASTER

If you want us to get scientific, aerobic activity is anything that makes your heart beat faster. And one way to get that heart to beat faster is to move faster! Pick up your daily pace and put some pep into your step when doing simple things like walking to your car or into work. Do you already walk for exercise? This writer suggests that walking at a faster pace increases your heart even more than running.

CUT DOWN ON YOUR SCREEN TIME

Imagine this scenario: you get from work, you sit down on the couch to enjoy your favorite show. Before you know it, you’ve been sitting there for hours. We’ve all been there! It’s easy to get lost in the screen, so give yourself a set amount of time on the couch. And while you’re at it, you don’t have to just sit. There are several activities you can do while watching TV, or get up and walk around during each commercial break.

TAKE THE STAIRS

Whenever you come to work to or go to the mall, just avoid the escalator or elevator. Be old fashioned, and take the stairs. Plus, it’s an easy way to maintain an active lifestyle. Challenge yourself with this tip… start parking a few floors higher in the parking structure to walk a few more flights of stairs.

FIND TIME TO SNEAK IN A FEW EXERCISES

It’s a challenge fitting in exercise to your daily schedule, we get it. But there are ways to incorporate simple exercises that don’t take additional time. For example, perform a few sets of 10 calf raises or squats while brushing your teeth. Or even better, take it to the workplace. Or even better, take it to the workplace. It’s a great way to kill the time between treatments or waiting for a late appointment to show up!

STAY ON TRACK: YOUR HEALTHY HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE

It’s almost impossible to make it through the holiday season without cheating on that diet plan just a little bit...and you always have that list of New Year’s resolutions you can use as backup to justify those slip ups. But what if there were a few diet hacks that made it just as easy to enjoy the holidays without gaining a ton of weight? Here’s five ways you can stay on track this holiday season.

Commit to a plan
Surviving all those holiday parties is much easier if you know what you are dealing with. Find out the menu in advance if you can because making decisions ahead of time means you are more likely to stick to a plan. A plan also lets you relax and focus on chatting with friends. If it’s a potluck that’s even better! Bring a guilt-free dish to enjoy.

Earn your cocktails
Commit to working out the day of the event and after. Schedule it so you stick to it, and maybe attend a class or go with a friend. If you have a commitment to workout the next day, you are less likely to indulge...no one wants that hangover! Work out three hours before the event, then come home, have a protein based snack and get ready. Oh and hydrate! When you arrive at the party, start with sparkling water and lemon as your first “drink.” This allows you to settle into the party without jumping right into have a drink.

Don't go hungry
Remember that protein based, post-workout snack we mentioned? It allows you to arrive feeling balanced and not too hungry...limiting binging on all those yummy apps! Besides, protein and fat help balance your blood sugar. Also consider a quick protein shake made in a blender bottle...it’s your new “roadie!”

Know your apps
Speaking of those appetizers...this is one of the biggest areas where people blow their diets. Look for seafood towers, chicken skewers, or the veggie tray and hummus. Avoid anything fried, quiches, or bread, all of which spike blood sugar. Grab a plate of high protein options and only fill it once...focus instead on chatting with friends.

Do dessert right
You might want to think about making a choice between dessert and cocktails, but if you are really craving something sweet consider a small piece of dark chocolate vs. cakes and cookies. Dark chocolate hits the spot without added fructose or too much sugar, and there are a few health benefits.

SAY GOODBYE TO PUFFY EYES: 4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

The eyes definitely have it...the ability to age you ten years if you aren’t careful. We bet you have many clients asking you about eye puffiness on a regular basis...why it happens, how to get rid of it, and of course how to stop it from coming back for good. We get it, that’s why we put together a list of four things you should talk to your clients about when it comes to those pesky, puffy eyes.

1. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT (AND DRINK)

Red wine might be good for the heart, but it’s not so good for the eyes. The inflammation sugar causes can wreak serious havoc. Red wine can also be a problem because many people are allergic, (they may not even realize it) causing a slight reaction which leads to swelling. Other tips? Watch salt intake: sodium causes the body to hold onto fluid...and of course, their best line of defense is always to drink water to flush out those toxins.

2. GET SOME SHUT EYE

While most associate dark eye circles with lack of sleep, puffiness can also happen if you get less than seven hours of rest. Put the screens down and focus on relaxing and committing to at least eight hours a night. Not getting enough rest? Here’s a tip: avoid rubbing the eyes in the morning...this can pull the delicate skin around the eyes and contribute to redness and swelling.

3. MOISTURIZE

A good moisturizer plumps, refreshes, and soothes tired, puffy skin. When it comes to products, recommend a lightweight lotion they can wear under concealer that uses natural products such as anise oil to reduce puffiness or vitamin C to brighten the area.

4. CHILL OUT

Everyone knows cold reduces inflammation and can be a good solution if clients wake up with a puffy eye emergency. Cold spoons, tea bags, cucumbers, and cool eye masks all work, and are easy to store in the freezer.

FIVE FOODS YOU MUST HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

Why not create a “healthier kitchen” as a way to enjoy a fresh start in 2018? This can apply to your home kitchen or the kitchen at your salon...since many of these things can easily be kept on hand for clients or team members (added salon perk...healthy snacks?) to enjoy. And as you know, what you put inside your body is a crucial part of having healthy skin...so make sure you have these four items in your kitchen at all times for a healthier new you in 2018.

FRUITS & VEGGIES

Okay, slightly obvious, but don’t count out the health benefits of fruits & veggies even in the winter months. In addition to citrus and apples, always stock your kitchen with fresh potatoes, limes, onions, lemons, and garlic for cooking. Look for recipes that call for only fresh produce as ingredients. Consider adding veggies to eggs, smoothies and muffins in place of other ingredients...and of course, don’t forget to eat them as snacks!

GREEK YOGURT

Low or non-fat, it’s a perfect choice for high-quality protein...17 grams in fact...which is equivalent to three eggs. Greek yogurt includes many essential nutrients such as potassium and calcium. Use it with your fruit to make a smoothie, as an oatmeal topper, or as a replacement for for sour cream or mayo.

NUTS

Studies show those that eat nuts have a lower risk for heart disease and certain cancers. Plus they are a great grab-and-go snack for in between clients! But remember portion control is key with nuts because they are higher in fat. Think about toasting them for more flavor and use on your greek yogurt, in salads, and on roasted veggies.

CANNED BEANS

Canned beans are one of the most convenient, inexpensive, and versatile staples in your pantry. Rich in fiber, iron, protein, and potassium...you should shoot to consume ½ a cup three times a week. Some ideas include snacking on roasted chickpeas, or spread hummus on your sandwich instead of mayo. Plus it’s soup season so be sure to add them to hearty soups and chili.

THREE STEPS TO LIVE BY TO FIX YOUR ACNE

1. TREAT IT NATURALLY ON THE INSIDE

It’s always a good idea to start by treating the issue naturally from the inside. Diet can make a difference. The goal is to minimize sugar, processed foods and eat plenty of colorful veggies. The right diet will help eliminate inflammation of the skin from the inside. Also consider trying a dose of Vitamin D...people with acne are typically deficient in Vitamin D. You can take a supplement, but a little bit of sunshine each day is even better.

2. TREAT IT NATURALLY OUTSIDE

Your blemishes don’t stand a chance when using natural products such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus, mistletoe and clary sage. Full of purifying, and antibacterial properties, these products are focused on cleaning, moisturizing and preventing breakouts.

3. HIDDEN DIRT ON YOUR FACE

Some acne is caused by clogged pores...so in this case washing your face is not enough. Clogged pores cause blackheads and whiteheads, but fortunately with a good cleanser and exfoliant will help. There’s also an underlying cause you probably haven’t considered. Your pillowcase! Every night you put your face down on a pillow that absorbs dirt, oils, dead skin cells...yuck! Consider having extra sets of sheets and change your pillowcases twice a week, or try these new pillow cases that will give your skin eight nights of perfectly clean sleep.

SUGARHOLIC? HERE ARE THE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS OF TOO MUCH SUGAR

We’ll admit it: we’re sugarholics. We love chocolate, pastries, desserts, and everything in between… it all tastes delicious, but we don’t always think about how sugar affects the body. From your skin to your mood, consuming too much sugar can definitely take a toll. When giving home care advice to your clients, be sure to remind them of these important side effects too much sugar can have on the body.

Sugar and your skin
Are there any negative effects of sugar on skin? You bet there is. The Cut called upon celebrity dermatologist, Dr. Frank Lipman, to get the info on sugar’s toxic side effects. He says that sugar actually breaks down collagen, which is the substance that makes skin look youthful and tight. So, if you’re providing skin treatments and home care for a client, their diet could be detrimental to any progress you make.

Sugar damages our minds
In addition to premature aging, a diet high in sugar can also lead to a risk of depression, anxiety and a lack of focus. Essentially, it’s that sugar brain fog we have all experienced. When one woman quit sugar for four weeks, she felt happier, more focused, slept better, and had more energy. Ok, reality check here… while a diet with absolutely zero sugar would be about impossible to achieve, remember that moderation is key.

The physical effects
One of the most well-known negative side effects of too much sugar is its link to obesity and Type II Diabetes. But in general, sugary foods just make you feel sluggish. Don’t forget that sugar also likes to hide in several foods, from soda and pastries, to fruits like watermelon, bananas, kiwi, and mango.

So what’s the takeaway? Challenge your clients to try and moderate their sugar intake for a few weeks. Believe us, they’ll be able to notice a difference in their mood and skin!

THREE REASONS HIGH PERFORMANCE BOTANICALS ARE STILL THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS

At Tu’el, we believe in the power of botanicals to combat skin issues… ingredients like tea tree oil, avocado and green tea are widely used in all of our products. In fact, when our mother, Eva, founded Tu’el in 1984, she relied on the best botanicals for skin just like today… it’s what SWAAY called being “all in the family!” Here is a look at why plant-based ingredients are still as effective today as they were 30 years ago.

Botanicals are not a trend
Unlike other skin care and health fads, botanical skin care has been the best in the business for decades. Eva pushed high-powered botanicals in the skin care industry decades ago, and although we have modernized the brand and products, the core ingredients are still the same. Rather than taking a gamble on a client’s skin with a new chemical, botanicals are researched, safe and effective.

Improves overall health
If you read the SWAAY article we linked to above, then you’ll notice our goal at Tu’el is to improve the skin’s overall health. Rather than treating one pimple or hydrating, Tu’el products balance and improve overall skin health, which help to achieve our main goal: to make your clients feel confident and good about their skin. Basically, we’re working from the inside out!

No harsh chemicals
When Eva began her journey in the skin care industry, we were just kids. Naturally, she created something that is safe for us, herself and everyone using the products. So she recruited botanical ingredients in skin care, and refused to rely on animal testing or use fillers, synthetic dyes, parabens, and sulfates. Since products are so pure, Tu’el is 100% safe for all skin types, ages and ethnicities; you can feel confident working with Tu’el products on teenagers and those with sensitive skin.

SECRETS TO AVOID SPREADING YOURSELF TOO THIN

Does this sound familiar? You’ve just taken on several new clients, said “yes” to two holiday get-togethers on the same night, agreed to have a dinner party at your house, and said you would take care of a friends dog while they are traveling. Soon you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. While it’s great to feel wanted and included, sometimes the art of saying no can really lead to saying yes to a more relaxed, centered life. Here’s some tips on how to avoid spreading yourself too thin.

Ask yourself: what is essential?
When you have a good balance between your home life, work life, and social life, you feel better, are more centered, are grateful and content. So rather than saying yes to everything you may enjoy, ask yourself what things are essential or crucial to my happiness? Then let the other things go. Once you define your priorities, and then learn how to address requests as they come up, you’re halfway there.

Learn alternatives to saying yes
Speaking of those requests, you don’t have to say yes to everything asked of you because you think you need to be polite. Learn the alternatives to saying yes or no such as asking people to let you think about it first, or pre-empting a request before it happens. Plus this is always a good time to learn the gentle art of saying no...something that many of us struggle with.

Use your days off
You can’t take them with you, so you should definitely use those days off! Work can easily be the most stressful part of you life, and let’s face it, sometimes life gets in the way of work. Errands piling up? Exhausted from back to back appointments? Or maybe you just need a mental health day...don’t let accumulated PTO days go to waste. You’ll be much more productive in the end.

Delegate, especially at work
Remember the goal here is to create more time in your day, so don’t feel guilty suggesting other colleagues take on a new project or client. Delegation can be seen as giving the gift of empowerment, creating opportunity to make a new connection, or a chance to try a new skill. And always take the time to delegate well...brief your colleagues, and explain why you think they are the perfect person for the job. Connect the dots for them and it will be a win-win for everyone.

4 Ways Green Tea Will Change Your Life

Ok, we know you know this, but green tea is pretty much the healthiest drink on the planet. Loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, it has powerful effects on our bodies, skin and overall well-being. Here are a few reasons why we can’t get enough of green tea...and you should make sure your clients can’t get enough either.

1. MAKES YOU SMARTER

Yes, it’s true, green tea does have the power to make you smarter. The powerful combination of caffeine (not as much as coffee though), and the amino acid L-theanine is proven to be a pretty potent mix when it comes to increasing brain function.

2. HELPS YOU WATCH YOUR WEIGHT

Need we say more? If you are looking at the ingredients for any fat burning product, we’re pretty sure you’ll find green tea listed. A natural energy and metabolic booster, it can help you lose weight.

3. HELPS YOU LIVE LONGER

Studies show green tea drinkers have a lower risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Green tea can help lower total and LDL cholesterol as well as provide other heart benefits.

4. IMPROVES YOUR SKIN

From fighting skin cancer, inflammation, and bacteria, drinking and applying products with green tea can combat skin issues and signs of aging. Full of vitamin B2 and vitamin E, green tea also plays a role in maintaining collagen levels in the skin...translation? Healthy, glowing skin that looks younger. As an added bonus, green tea can also help keep your hair healthy because the leafy fibers can stimulate hair growth.

FIVE REASONS WHY YOU COULD BE FEELING TIRED ALL THE TIME

Have you been asking yourself lately, “Why am I tired all the time?”. We’re not talking about those afternoon slumps, a little bit of coffee fixes that! Chronic fatigue is a little different… sometimes, it has underlying causes more than just a lack of sleep. Keep reading for five reasons why you could be feeling tired all the time.

You’re not getting enough iron
If you’re feeling weak and short of breath, you could be running low on iron or even dealing with anemia. Without enough iron, the body has a difficult time transporting oxygen! If you’re taking preventative measures, increase your iron intake to prevent the onset of anemia… plus, a lack of iron can affect the skin’s glow. When working on a client’s dull skin, take their diet into account as well.

Stress
Unsurprisingly, chronic stress is likely the reason why you could be feeling tired all the time. Mental exhaustion can tire the body and mind keeping you restless at night… in other words, don’t create problems out of nothing! If there were a quick fix for being tired, we suggest you invest in trying to manage your stress.

You use electronic devices in bed
You may have heard that blue light can negatively affect your sleep quality, but honestly, we’re terrible at putting our phones away before bed! Everything from your laptop, tablet, cell phone, and televisions produce blue light, which can suppress your body from releasing melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep pattern.

Your thyroid is out of balance
If none of these symptoms seem to fit you, and you’re still wondering how to stop feeling tired, it be something physical such as your thyroid… when the thyroid is out of whack or underactive, your metabolism and energy use is effected. If nothing seems to be a quick fix for being tired, we suggest you visit your doctor to double-check.

Your diet is too high in sugar
You already know that we believe in the statement, “you are what you eat!” And in addition to affecting your skin, a poor diet can also result in fatigue… if you constantly eat high-sugar meals, too many refined meals like fast food, then your blood sugar will spike and fall quickly. You’re a skin care professional that is passionate about natural skin care, so use that same approach in your diet too.

3 WAYS THE HOLIDAYS CAN WREAK HAVOC ON THE SKIN AND HOW TO FIGHT BACK

3 WAYS THE HOLIDAYS CAN WREAK HAVOC ON THE SKIN AND HOW TO FIGHT BACK

November marks the beginning of the holiday season...a time spent celebrating with family and friends, timeless traditions, and enjoying savory foods. But it can also be the worst time of the year for your clients’ skin. Think about it...they’re facing cold weather, overindulging in food and drinks, lack of sleep, and of course stress. But there are a few things you can do help them face these challenges head on, and make sure their complexion is something to celebrate all season long.

1. CHALLENGE: NOT ENOUGH SLEEP

So much to do, so little time, right? From party planning, to cooking, and shopping, so much gets added to the “to do” list during the holiday season. This often means late night multi-tasking. Translation? No one is getting their beauty sleep. Without proper sleep, skin does not have a chance to naturally repair itself. In addition it can cause the eyes to be puffy and red, and those dreaded dark circles just get worse. If a good night’s sleep is not in the plan, recommend products that naturally reduce inflammation and moisturize the eye area...and include brightening vitamin C...it’s like a good night’s sleep in a bottle.

2. CHALLENGE: STRESS

The reality is the holidays are a stressful time...which can create major issues with your clients’ skin. Breakouts, excess oil, dryness, and redness can all get worse due to stress. The best thing you can do is recommend ways for your clients to de-stress and take care of themselves. And maybe a professional facial too?

3. CHALLENGE: HOLIDAY FOOD AND DRINKS

Both sugar and alcohol can create major skin problems. Common side effects of overindulging in adult beverages include dryness and redness, while sugar can cause skin to age quickly. If they do go overboard, recommend products that focus on anti-aging and hydrating the skin.

HOLIDAY STRESS & YOUR SKIN: GET THINGS GLOWING WITH THESE SKINCARE TIPS

Holiday stress and a little too much “cheer” can leave your clients’ skin looking dull, tired, and puffy. Throw in the sudden onslaught of the cold weather outside...and the dry heat inside...and all the moisture is now sucked right out of their skin. But getting that party-perfect skin glowing again is easy with a few tips from the pros, giving their skin something to celebrate this season.

CLEANSE

Seems like a no-brainer, but cleansing the proper way in the morning can do wonders for the skin all day...creating a good base for additional products and makeup. And speaking of early wake ups (or late holiday party nights), remind them that if their eyes are puffy, considering icing them. Apply chilled spoons or ice under the eyes will naturally help. Then freshen up with a de-puff moisturizing lotion...especially one that features brightening vitamin C.

EXFOLIATE

Remind them exfoliating is their friend, especially in the winter. Flaky skin can leave their face looking dull and dry, but a good (and gentle) polishing scrub can help them discover a whole new look. Buffing away dead skin cells will not only brighten the skin, it will help prevent acne and clogged pores….all while giving the skin that little extra edge it needs to recover during the holiday season.

SOOTHE

Crazy holiday schedules can definitely lead to changes in the skin. Who has time to stop and properly make sure we are sticking to a normal skin care routine? Recommend a soothing mask with skin-replenishing ingredients such as aloe, willow bark, and arnica...these will all help in leaving them with cool, relieved, and supple skin.

PAMPER

Finally, remind them to take time for themselves this holiday season. Yes, it’s a time for enjoying family and friends, but not at the expense of their skin or well-being. Some ideas include indulging in a relaxing bath and apply a firming mask, scheduling a yoga class, or reading a book by the fire. Taking that daily moment to rejuvenate will make the whole season merrier.
